How To Make Cinder Toffee/Yellowman/Homemade ‘Crunchie’

As promised to a merry band on Twitter here is how to make Cinder Toffee! This is for you @jobeaufoix @insomniacmummy @LizJarvisUK and @cafebebe!

Homemade Crunchie is called Yellowman in Ireland and is more commonly known as Cinder Toffee. It is delicious, cheap to make and dramatically volcanic…my kids love it!

We have often made ‘volcanoes’ with vinegar and bicarbonate of soda, this works on the same principle with the added bonus that it is edible.


300g caster sugar

4 tbsps Golden Syrup

A pinch of cream of tartar

1 tsp white wine vinegar

5 tbsps cold water

1Β½ tsps bicarbonate of soda
