Welcome back to Something for the Weekend. If you are new here I run a weekly link up sharing ideas for family fun at the weekend. At the bottom of my post about our plans, you will find a little blue blob where you can link any family friendly activity ideas!
I can’t believe a whole year has passed since I last wrote about Earth Hour with the Thinly Spreads but here we are again, preparing for an evening we enjoy second only to Christmas Eve!
Last year’s Earth Hour was the biggest one ever with 128 countries taking part. From tiny beginnings it has become an inspirational global movement celebrating individual, business and governmental commitment to the planet. The challenge is, of course, to go beyond one hour and to begin to make big changes for all our futures. Coming together on Saturday night at 8.30 and turning the lights off for an hour in our homes, businesses, in iconic landmarks and parliamentary buildings is a good way to start.
Last year Bonus Boy was in bed but this year all six of us will start at the top of the house in The Tall One’s bedroom and walk down two flights of stairs turning all the electric lights off as we go. I will be leading the way with my Wee Willie Winky candle and we will all settle in front of the fire for an hour of family fun.
Last year’s light graffiti was such a success that it will be happening again this year and we will be trying to surpass last year’s triumphs. Using wind up and rechargeable torches and a camera on a tripod set on the slowest shutter speed this is what we produced!
I thought that we might emulate the fantastic Stomp this year. I took the Big Three to see them in Bath a couple of years ago and we clapped, banged and stomped all the way home. They are supporting Earth Hour and most of their rhythm makers are recycled, junk yard finds. Mr Thinly Spread informed me yesterday that he has some very substantial cardboard tubes at work which he is going to slice up into different lengths for us and we are going to make drums to bash!
After all this excitement we will calm down with the traditional paper consequences game…actually that always makes everyone giggle hysterically and can get quite out of hand! I may have to finish it all off with stories by candlelight!
We’ll also have a chat about how we can carry on with our commitment beyond the hour. We try hard to be green all year round but we are guilty of leaving machinery on stand by so I will be suggesting we try really hard not to do that anymore. I expect the children will come up with a whole list of severe measures (children are like that!) and I will have to tone them down a bit. I’m not wearing a hair shirt for anyone!
So, what are you and yours up to this weekend? Have you got a post to share to give us all some ideas? Something to do, something to make. something to read, somewhere to go – all are welcome! It doesn’t have to be Earth Hour related. Old posts or new can be added to the link, we are building up quite a resource bank now! Please link back here, thank you, and grab the badge if you’d like.
Here’s the lovely little blue blob!
